Our Son, Vinnie

April 2009

Vinnie is really, really improving on his balance. It is amazing how quickly he is coming around. I was just thinking tonight that it was Good Friday that I put together the shopping cart walker for him and we were amazed at how quickly he took to that. His other walker moved too fast for him and he didn't use it. But just 2.5 weeks ago he was starting to walk behind things. But it wasn't pretty. He looked like the early, early Frankenstein.

Tonight he loves walking behind both walkers, he wants to walk around as you hold his hands and tonight he even walked while holding one hand. He has improved leaps and bounds on his balance. He stands unassisted for long periods of time now.

I remember wondering if he would be walking by the time we went to Myrtle in July. 13.5 months is no where near delayed, so I wasn't worried - but I just didn't think he was going to be an early walker.

But I think I am adjusting my expectations ... he is really improving quickly.

Poor Vinnie has his first post-tubes ear infection. Daycare called me today to report that Vinnie's right ear was bleeding (for the record, the left ear was infected last Tues but the right ear was clear).

So, we are starting the antibiotic drops in the right ear and continuing in the left ear.

    *sigh*

(Although the good news is that this ear infection doesn't seem to be bothering him. He is not in discomfort so that is a relief.)

Vinnie took his first step yesterday afternoon. My Mom was up and was on the floor playing with him when he let go of his walker and took one step towards her. And then fell flat ... but he took a step.

He hasn't come close since, but it was exciting to see him try. I doubt it is much coincidence that he took his first step 4 days after getting his ears fixed?!?!

Well, Vinnie had tubes put in his ears this morning. We were there at 6:30am and they took us back relatively quickly. They checked his lungs (as he's had a bit of a cough) and his lungs were clear, so they put him in a hospital gown and gave him his ibuprofen/sedative cocktail. They took him back for surgery and we went to the lobby and I checked the time and it was 7:30am. The exact time they told us that they would do the surgery.

Within about 10 minutes they called us back to talk to the doctor who was already finished with the procedure. He said that Vinnie did great and that his left ear was a mess with the infection and fluid. The right ear had a bit of fluid, but not as much as the left.

We went back to the lobby and about 10 minutes later they took us back to see Vinnie. That was the only hard part. They had warned us that he might be unhappy coming out of the anesthesia and they were right! He was UNHAPPY! Crying, pushing away. Just generally in a state where you couldn't comfort him. He did take some apple juice, so that was good. But he didn't calm down.

We decided to go (well, actually we didn't fight when they dismissed us). I was ready to get him back home and try to comfort him there. He continued to cry in the car and it was going on 30-40 minutes now. When all of a sudden, he opened his eyes half way home and all was good. He was smiling and happy.

We got him home and he crawled around. We gave him a bottle that he sucked down and then he ate some Cheerios and pears. He napped well for two naps and continued to eat and drink well all day.

The only part that he didn't like was when we had to put the antibiotic drops in his left ear. He is not happy at all with us when we do that. Mostly because we have to hold him down.

But he has done well all day and we are glad that this is behind him.

Oh but I did confirm during all of the crying, that he is finally getting his front, bottom two teeth. I had plenty of time to inspect his gums as he was an unhappy camper.

Vinnie is just too cute! He is still ornery though. He looks right at you, makes sure you see him and then takes off for the steps and goes up as fast as he can! He thinks it is hilarious.

And to watch him eat ... oh it is so funny! Actually it isn't the watching, it is the listening. He is so vocal when he is eating ... always with the 'mmmmm's thoughout the entire meal.

Oh and he is such a boy! I was changing him yesterday morning and he was alternatively chewing and blowing on his arm and at one point in time he made a "fart noise" against his arm and he thought that was HYSTERICAL! So he keeps trying to do it over and over again. He won't be quite so successful, but that doesn't stop him from cracking up at the potential of the funny sound.

Vinnie's appointment at the ENT went well. The doctor quickly ascertained that Vinnie needs tubes in his ears to help the fluid drain. His surgery is scheduled for the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 21st.

I called yesterday to get Vinnie into the ENT doctor and they had a cancellation for Monday at 3:30pm, so I grabbed it.

I will let you know what the doctor says about his ears.

Well, Vinnie has yet another ear infection. :( I took him today as he hasn't been sleeping nor eating well. Both ears have a lot of puss and he reacts when she examines the left one. So it is definitely infected and the right one is on its way there.

Bottom line is that she is sending us off to an ear, nose and throat doctor to have him evaluated for possible tubes.

Vinnie stayed home from daycare again today. He had a bad night and still had a fever in the early morning. He seemed better in the morning/early afternoon, but still isn't doing well this evening. His fever came back a bit and he was fussy. So, he isn't going to daycare again tomorrow. We're going to give him one more day ... actually that will give him until Monday to recover before he has to go back to daycare.
